New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
An automatic level crossing on the Birmingham-Bristol main line north of Cheltenham.
Railway type and traffic
Passenger services in the hands of Cross Country Voyagers, 170s and 158s, plus the occasional 150.
Freight consists of DB Schenker coal services from Avonmouth to Midlands power stations, North East - South Wales steel services, fuel tanks, etc. Also some military traffic, and DRS nuclear flask workings.
A good day might see several class DBS 60s, and a FL70, breaking the Shed monopoly.
Environment
Open countryside, only local traffic along the lane. Not far from the M5 but still quiet and peaceful. Only noise from the barrier warning siren.
Road directions
From M5 J9:
Head along the A46 towards Ashchurch.
At the 3rd set of lights turn right and follow the road to a T junction, then turn right onto the A435 towards Cheltenham.
After about half a mile take the first lane on you right, this will take you down to the crossing.

Plenty of parking on both sides of the crossing, even if Network Rail vans in attendance.
Your car will be in sight at all times.

From either it would then be a 25-30 minute walk to the level crossing. Tewksbury is served every 15 minutes from Cheltenham by Stagecoach services 41/42 and Bishops Cleeve evry 10 minutes by Stagecoach service 'D'.

Photographic notes
Line runs basically north-south on a gentle curve.
Two good shots for north bound trains, one for southbound, but a lot of room for experimentation.
Generally quiet, but a little exposed so could be some wind noise on video footage.

March 2010 Update:
Recent bank works has cleared all the vegitation from the southern side of the crossing. Althought currently a building site the location should be veg free for a few years after the completion of these works. There is however a large radio mast and associated cabin on the western side of the line that needs to be worked around wide angle shots.
